At 'Girls Growing Government,' our mission is to empower young girls to confidently engage with politics and contribute to societal discourse. Through a multifaceted approach of empowerment, education, and opportunity, we inspire girls to actively participate in political processes. By fostering a supportive environment, we aim to equip girls with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to make meaningful contributions to the political landscape. Our ultimate goal is to cultivate a generation of informed and empowered young women who are ready to make their mark in government and society.
The belief that politics is only for men discourages young women from getting involved. To empower girls, it's crucial to encourage them and showcase women in politics. That's why our founder, Scarlett De Witt, ran for the NYS Assembly last year. It is important – to lead by example and inspire others. When girls see people like themselves in leadership roles, it empowers them. A simple "you can do it" can have a huge impact.
Young women, like many individuals, fear discussing politics due to past adversities. When teaching about politics, the emphasis is on the importance of unbiased education and positive engagement. Too often, educators inject bias into their teachings, hindering understanding and compromise. Positive politics, which fosters understanding, compromise, and rejects bullying or stereotypes, is crucial for healthy engagement. This emphasis is always maintained when speaking to students.
Over the years, there have been struggles to find political opportunities, from running for office to locating internships and election dates. Recognizing the lack of accessible information, efforts have been made to create step-by-step guides and gather resources to empower girls. Collaborating with organizations and schools has enabled the sharing of these opportunities through Q&A sessions, pamphlets, and presentations. Providing these resources minimizes uncertainty and demonstrates what can be achieved.
